Gelco Chimney Cleaning Service Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Why Lawrence Homeowners Choose Gelco Chimney Cleaning

We clean, inspect, and repair Gelco chimney systems throughout Lawrence Gelco service areas, from the original galvanized liners in the 1920s estates to the G-Series stainless conversions installed after Hurricane Sandy. As an independent Gelco service provider, we’re not affiliated with the manufacturer, but we’ve worked on hundreds of their installations along the South Shore and know exactly where they fail in this salt-soaked coastal climate. If your Gelco cap is backing smoke into the living room or the liner is showing rust streaks, we’ll tell you what’s happening and what it’ll take to put it right. Call (516) 604-2573 and you’ll get Wendell or one of his crew, not a call center.

Gelco service in Woodmere and nearby Lawrence sits on a narrow strip between Jamaica Bay and Reynolds Channel, so your Gelco system gets hit with salt air from two directions at once. That detail matters more than most homeowners realize. A Gelco chimney cap that would last fifteen years in Garden City can choke on creosote and corrosion in five or six seasons here. The salt accelerates everything: mesh clogging, galvanized pitting, mortar spalling around the cap base. We see it every week during burning season.

Why Trust Top Hat Chimney for Your Gelco Chimney Cleaning?

Wendell Pike has been inside more chimneys on the South Shore than he can count. He picked up the trade formally at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, then spent years getting hands-on time with every flue style you can imagine before founding Top Hat Chimney in 1999. If you live in one of the older Gelco in Hewlett or nearby Lawrence homes near the Five Towns, there’s a good chance he’s already swept your chimney or your neighbor’s. He knows which houses still carry the original terra cotta tile and which ones had a hasty Sandy rebuild. And if your Gelco liner is clean, he’ll tell you it’s clean. He’d rather earn your call next season than pad a ticket today.

We’re not a franchise that rotated in last spring. We’re locally owned and owner-operated, with a published address and license number. Every job gets the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, one call brings us back. Our Gelco work uses OEM caps, storm collars, and refractory panels when replacement is required, and we always explain exactly what we’re doing before a single tool comes off the truck. The price we quote is the price on the invoice.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Lawrence

  • Clogged Gelco universal chimney caps. The factory mesh screen on original Gelco rain caps is fine enough to catch creosote, soot, and windblown debris fast. In Lawrence’s damp, salty air, that mesh turns into a solid crust within a couple of burning seasons. The result is poor draft, smoke backpuffing into the room, and a fireplace that just won’t stay lit. We remove the cap, clean or replace the mesh, and often recommend a double-layer mesh upgrade that handles the coastal conditions far better.
  • Creosote buildup on internal weld seams. Gelco G-Series rigid stainless liners are solid products, but their internal weld seams are slightly raised. Those rough spots trap soot and creosote faster than smooth-walled liners. A standard single-pass sweeping misses what’s packing into those seam grooves. We make extra brushing passes specifically along the weld lines, and on stage-two or stage-three buildup we’ll chip out what’s hardened before we call it done.
  • Galvanized outer liner corrosion. The original Gelco hybrid liners use galvanized steel on the outer wall. Galvanized doesn’t hold up against the salt spray that saturates Lawrence masonry from Jamaica Bay and Reynolds Channel. We regularly find pin-hole rust spots and white corrosion bloom that eventually lets moisture into the flue. When that happens, we recommend replacing the outer section with a 316L stainless liner that’s built for marine exposure.
  • Cracked refractory panels in Gelco zero-clearance conversions. Many of Lawrence’s grand pre-war homes were built with oversized fireboxes designed for coal or cordwood, then converted to Gelco gas inserts or venting kits. The refractory panels inside those zero-clearance units crack after a few heating seasons, especially if the firebox wasn’t properly sized for the conversion. Once those panels split, heat reaches the framing. We replace panels with genuine Gelco refractory material and check the surrounding clearances while we’re in there.
  • Storm collar and flashing failures from wind-driven salt spray. Nor’easters push salt-laden water up under the flashing where the Gelco liner exits the chase. The storm collar was designed for lighter weather. After a few freeze-thaw cycles with salt-impregnated masonry, the collar loosens and water starts running down the outside of the liner. We reset or replace the collar, reseal the flashing joint with a marine-grade sealant, and often apply a vapor-permeable waterproofing to the chase to slow future salt-driven deterioration.

Gelco Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We stock genuine Gelco caps, storm collars, and the most common refractory panel sizes on our truck, so most repairs in Lawrence don’t require a second visit. For liners, though, we’re honest about the trade-off. Original Gelco galvanized components corrode fast in the Five Towns salt air. When a liner needs replacement, we usually specify a quality aftermarket 316L stainless steel that handles marine exposure better than the original galvanized spec. It costs a little more up front and lasts a lot longer within sight of Reynolds Channel.

We don’t recommend full liner replacement unless the existing Gelco components are severely corroded, warped, or unsafe. If a targeted repair and our Chimney Cleaning & Sweep services will get you through several more seasons safely, that’s what we’ll recommend. The camera footage tells the story, and we show it to you before any recommendation is made. Call (516) 604-2573 and we’ll walk you through what we’re seeing, plain English, no pressure.

Our Gelco Service Process - Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We start with a camera inspection of the entire Gelco system, from the firebox to the cap, looking specifically for the weld-seam creosote buildup, mesh clogging, galvanized corrosion, and refractory cracks we’ve covered above. You see the footage. You get the verdict.
  2. 2
Cleaning and targeted repair. We brush the liner with extra passes on the internal weld seams, clean or replace the cap, and address any storm collar or flashing issues. If refractory panels need replacing, we use genuine Gelco material and check all clearances before reseating them.
  3. 3
Testing. We run a draft test with the firebox sealed and the flue cold. If there’s a draft problem, we find it before we leave. On too many Lawrence jobs, we find draft issues that have been there since a hasty post-Sandy rebuild, and nobody ever flagged them.
  4. 4
Warranty and follow-up. Every Gelco job gets the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t holding up, one call brings us back. No phone tree, no argument.
